HEART DISEASE IS A MEDICAL PROBLEM WITH A DENTAL SOLUTION
Many recent studies reveal that those with gum disease were 2.5 times more likely to suffer heart attacks than those with healthy gums! A serious oral infection can result in tooth loss, and if untreated, has now been shown to cause cardiovascular disease.
America’s #1 killer Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in America. It affects 81 million Americans and is the culprit in one of every two deaths in the United States. The average cost to families dealing with a heart attack or stroke is around $375,000 not including the emotional and time costs. Most people think that they are not at risk of a heart attack if they control their cholesterol and blood pressure, but they aren’t aware of other major risk factors. The good news is that with the right information and strategies, heart attacks are preventable—even if heart disease runs in the family.
What is the Dentists role in this disease?
INFLAMMATION in your blood vessels is the MAJOR cause of arterial disease ( Not Cholesterol)
5 high risk pathogens, bacteria, are the major cause of this inflammation.
Their main source IS YOUR MOUTH!!!
Don't wait to treat the heart attack or stroke, treat the disease before the heart attack or stroke.
We all know a family member or friend who was diagnosed "healthy" a week or two before they had a heart attack or stroke.
With today's technology, it is not ok to have a yearly exam at your primary care physician and "watch" our early warning signs climb until we are given a pill or two to "manage" the disease, or worse, we have an event.
If you have a moderate or high risk or family risk for CVD, your physician should be asking you about your periodontal health. How many of you have ever been told to go to your dentist and manage your oral infection or inflammation? Unfortunately, not very many. There is rarely a day that goes by where I do not refer one of my patients out for a medical referral due to something that I find in our routine examinations. When we focus on our patients first, it is easy to make this medical/dental communication occur.
As a dentist, my main role is to focus on the Bacterial source of the heart disease, decrease or eliminate the source of the disease (inflammation on the vessels), and decrease or eliminate the disease.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO TREAT THE SOURCE OF THE DISEASE, NOT THE AFTERMATH OF THE DISEASE.
At Chandler Dental Center your Oral Bacteria can be identified through a simple swish and spit test, which allows us to identify disease-causing pathogens, implicated in gum disease, heart disease and a host of other whole body diseases.
Physicians and dentists rely on this type of testing to personalize periodontal treatments and to recognize related systemic health risks.
WITHOUT GOOD PERIODONTAL HEALTH, YOU CANNOT HAVE GOOD HEART HEALTH!
