How Often Should I Get a Dental Cleaning?

Most dentists recommend coming in at least twice a year to have your teeth examined and professionally cleaned. This is just as important even if you have a strong oral care routine you practice at home. In the office, we can do more to break down plaque in areas that brushes can’t clean as effectively. It also allows us to examine you for common dental problems like gum disease, tooth decay, and more. During an exam, we can even provide oral cancer screenings. For patients who are more prone to dental issues, we may recommend three or four annual visits depending on your situation.

How Do Dentists Clean Your Teeth?

The bulk of the dental cleaning will be performed by one of our friendly dental hygienists. A small handheld mirror allows them to take a close look for any noticeable problems. Plaque and tartar can then be removed with a thin metal scraper, which can take longer depending on how much tartar buildup needs to be removed. After plaque has been dealt with, the final step is an electric brushing that makes use of gritty toothpaste. Finally, your hygienist will floss and then rinse your teeth.

What if I Need a Deeper Cleaning?

If you’ve ever had a deep clean recommended, it’s likely intended to help fight gingivitis or gum disease. While regular cleanings are targeted above the gum line, periodontal issues require a more intensive cleaning below the gum line. Plaque and tartar can become trapped in spaces that form between the teeth and gums. Deep cleanings can be more uncomfortable but are very important when it comes to preventing more serious issues like advanced gum disease or even tooth loss.
