5 Signs You Have TMJ

August 9, 2022 5:49 pm Published by man holds his jaw in pain with TMJ/TMD disorder

The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, connects each side of your lower jaw to your skull. The TMJ is responsible for opening and closing your mouth and other mouth motions.

Though this joint is known as the TMJ, the disorder of the specific joint is often referred to as TMJ/TMD. Symptoms associated with TMJ/TMD disorder will vary, but five common signs can prompt you to consider an evaluation with our experienced dental team in San Antonio!

1. Popping or Clicking Jaw

A clicking jaw, or popping one, is a common symptom of TMJ. Over time there is potential for jaw clicking to become accompanied by pain, tenderness, and swelling.

2. Sore Jaw, Head, or Neck

Unfortunately, TMJ symptoms may not stay localized to the jaw. Since the TMJ connects to the head, symptoms can spread to surrounding areas of the body, including the head or neck.

3. Cracked Tooth

Patients who suffer from TMJ tend to grind their teeth during the day or when asleep. This can increase the chance of a cracked tooth that could not be caused by anything else. If you have a severely cracked tooth, it may be a dental emergency, and we suggest you contact our office as soon as possible.

4. Neck Pain

Neck pain associated with TMJ/TMD disorder includes muscle cramps, stiffness, reduced flexibility, and pain.

5. Migraines

Migraines or intense headaches associated with TMJ/TMD disorder will radiate from the jaw. Frequent headaches should not be a regular occurrence and may be caused by consistent pressure or jaw misalignment.
